This is a message from OneWorld Magazine about our current feature special which is dedicated to Ethiopia and called "ETHIOPIA, LAND OF PLENTY". In this special ten different expert authors write about this rich and diverse empire about such topics as searching for the lost ark, hiking in the African mountains, exploring the people and the history of the land of Zion. http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/ Our goal is to presents the reader with a vigorous, lasting and sensible image about Ethiopia, acting as an introduction to the region's cultural heritage, the wealth and uniqueness of its environment and its potential for travel and adventure. A description or brief excerpt of the stories in the ETHIOPIA feature follow: o GUILT AND CULTURE An Introduction by Philip Briggs "A common response to a country like Ethiopia is to feel that it is wrong to enjoy ourselves amid such suffering, that tourism is frivolously out of context in such a poor country..." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/intro.html o THE LOST ARK OF THE COVENANT by Graham Hancock "Biblical and other archaic sources speak of the Ark of the Covenant blazing with fire and light, inflicting cancerous tumours and severe burns, levelling mountains, stopping rivers, blasting whole armies and laying waste cities." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/ark.html o THE LOST CITIES OF AFRICA by Basil Davison "What can be said about this past-about the formative fifteen or twenty centuries, that is, before European discovery and conquest? What can be said and what, where present knowledge fails, is it reasonable to believe? [This story] is an attempt -- necessarily tentative, summarized, and selective -- to answer these questions against a background of the whole of Africa south of the Sahara." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/lost.html o HAILE SELLASSIE AND MUSSOLINI by Harold C. Marcus "In September 1934, Mussolini had decided to take Ethiopia... Most observers at the time were ignorant of Ethiopia's historic refusal to abandon its independence. They did not reckon on the steel spine of Haile Sellassie and his compatriots' deeply entrenched anti- Italian attitudes." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/musso.html o SURVIVING SALVATION by Dr. Ruth Westheimer & Dr. Steven Kaplan "Israel's success record in secret operations under the harshest of conditions is unrivaled... The resettlement of the Ethiopians is neither secret nor dramatic. It is, in fact, a long, complex process whose heroes usually go unnoticed." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/falasha.html o RASTAFARI ROOTS AND IDEOLOGY by Barry Chevannes "In spite of pressure by the police on the Rastafari for ganja and other alleged offenses, I have not come across a single instance of a Bobo being arrested or detained. As Bobo, they retreated further away from the world of the profane, cutting themselves off and maintaining the separation by a ritual distance." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/rasta.html o WOMEN IN POWER by Lucy Pankhurst "Lucy, alias Dinknesh - literally "you are lovely" - is the first woman in Ethiopian history, indeed in the history of the world. She was a dainty little person, an intrepid walker who came down from the trees some three million years ago in the Afar region of eastern Ethiopia..." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/women.html o AFRICA HIGH & WILD by Beyond Productions for The Discovery Channel The making of a documentary, "their story is not about the physical achievement of an extensive African mountain trek, great as it is, but an adventure story where the journey - the people, places and experience shared - becomes tantamount to the mountaineering feats fulfilled." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/highwild.html o THE OMO AND BLUE NILE RIVERS by ADRIFT EXPEDITIONS "If you enjoy the wild and the untouched and would like to witness first hand a remnant of what Africa must have been like before man, then Ethiopia is for you... Outdoor challenges in a country where culture and traditions date back over 3000 years." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/adrift.html o GELADA BABOONS by Linda Waddell of Partridge Films: "They are the gelada baboons of Ethiopia and they are found nowhere else in the world. Their main home is in the beautiful and rugged Simen Mountains, an area of ancient volcanoes in northern Ethiopia." http://www.envirolink.org/oneworld/focus/etiopia/baboon.html Please let us know your impressions of the site and its contents.
